By Elise Craig/BERKELEY At the Ashby BART station, campaign workers are having a tough time finding people who haven’t already voted.
Barbara Hammer, who came to the station at 7:30 this morning to campaign for Berkeley mayoral candidate Shirley Dean, found that most people had either already voted or already knew who they would vote for.
“I would say 75 percent of people say they’ve already voted, and at least this morning, all the people have their stickers on. I’ve only found two undecided voters so far,” she said.
Hammer gave up campaigning in North Berkeley yesterday because almost everyone she talked to had already turned in his or her absentee ballot.
The Alameda County Registrar office says 46 percent of county voters are registered mail-in ballot voters.
Instead of encouraging people to vote, Andrew Klaus and fellow campaign worker Eric Folmer, proponents of Measure WW, ended up gauging whether the measure would pass based on responses from those who had already voted.
“It’s looking very good, but it’s one of those that needs two-thirds to pass,” Folmer said.
Berkeley Measure FF campaign volunteer Rachel Muelstein wasn’t too surprised when she found most people had already voted.
“Yesterday, I waited in line for over two hours to vote at City Hall in San Francisco,” she said. “It was kind of cool to see so many people, but after the first hour, I just wanted to vote. And then I had to fill out four ballots because San Francisco has 22 initiatives,” she said.
