Ethel Collins, an 80-year-old Berkeley resident, experienced racism first hand as a young woman in Michigan. She never dreamt she’d see the day when a black man was elected president of the United States. But that day has finally come.
On the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 4, I sat with Collins and discussed the changes she’s witnessed over the course of her life. Moments after the polls closed, CBS News projected that Barack Obama would be the 44th president of the United States. Collins erupted with joy.
