A victim talks about the night of her attack

Posted on 09 December 2008

By Huda Ahmed/ Oakland Crime happens to people everyday, but it’s the emotional toll on victims that is often overlooked. This is a story of a woman who was beaten and robbed over 20 years ago. The incident still haunts her despite the passage of time.

Sunday brunch? It means more than a delicious weekend to Thai Americans

Sunday brunch? It means more than a delicious weekend to Thai Americans

Posted on 02 December 2008

By Ayako Mie/BERKELEY

Growing up, Virada Chatikul was a shy girl. She was too embarrassed to speak in front of her classmates in school.  But that all changed one day when she was 15 and was attending the traditional dance performance at the Berkeley Thai Temple Sunday Food Offering.

“I really wanted to be part of a group that I could really identify with myself as a Thai American growing up in San Francisco,” said Chatikul, a second-generation Thai American. “I really cannot imagine what trajectory my life would have taken if I had not been part of this program.”

Inside the Bancroft Hotel’s craftsman-style ballroom, a rare meeting of Berkeley’s green minds occurred on Thursday for the 2008 Sustainability Summit and Green Gathering. Over locally grown and produced wine, beer, an assortment of tapas—and, of course, a small carbon footprint—a who’s who of environmental leaders mixed, mingled, promoted environmentally conscious projects and recognized local organizations for achievements.

Hosted by the Ecology Center and the City of Berkeley’s Office of Economic Development, the 2008 Sustainability Summit and Green Gathering sought to provide an open forum to exchange ideas and name four of the year’s most Earth-friendly projects “Champions of Sustainability.”

Posted on 24 November 2008

Ayako Mie/BERKELEY

After more than a year of controversy surrounding placement of cell phone antennas, the Berkeley Planning Commission recommended Wednesday to the city council that only one firm be allowed to install antennas at any one location, and that those antenna frequencies be monitored annually. NN paid the price of Measure Y’s failures

NN paid the price of Measure Y’s failures

by Paula Lehman/OAKLAND  Voters in Oakland, where there have been over 100 homicides so far in 2008, on Tuesday turned down a ballot measure that would have put 105 officers and 75 police services technicians on the street over the course of three years. But it wasn’t a lack of campaigning that ruined Measure NN’s chances; instead, many people believe that it was the unfulfilled promise of an earlier crime-fighting measure that killed this year’s initiative.

Gentrification in West Oakland

Gentrification in West Oakland

By Huda Ahmed/ WEST OAKLAND  Although gentrification is not a new issue, it is still a nightmare for many Americans. One example is West Oakland, where a low income, African American population struggle to keep their homes in the midst of the current economic crisis and development, which priced many of them out of the area.  As a result, Oakland’s African American population has decreased from 35 to 30 percent in the last six years, according to the figures collected by the U.S. Census in 2000 and 2006.

Noisy trains, angry residents in West Berkeley

Noisy trains, angry residents in West Berkeley

Posted on 18 October 2008

by Tasneem Paghdiwala/WEST BERKELEY

Jeanne Blackshear works at an art supply store near the Berkeley Amtrak Station in West Berkeley, and she has lived three blocks from the tracks for four years. Blackshear says it took her that long to get used to the constant sound of the horns. But now she has a baby, and he wakes up crying through the night on schedule with the trains. “We’re trying to move out of the neighborhood, and the noise is one of the biggest reasons,” she says.

City Council suggests 8% mitigation fee

City Council suggests 8% mitigation fee

Posted on 13 October 2008

By Ayako Mie/WEST BERKELEY

The Berkeley City Council on September 23rd reviewed recommendations that would determine how much homeowners would have to pay if they decide to convert their properties into condominiums.

At the center of the debate are the city’s mitigation fees launched in 2005 to help create new affordable housing. Once a rental unit is converted to a condominium, the seller must give the city a percentage of their sale. The Berkeley Housing Department then uses that money to build affordable housing.

By Angela J. Bass/OAKLAND

On Monday evening, East Oakland’s Tassafaronga Recreation Center was crammed with local residents who complained about headaches that they said were caused by the noxious fumes from nearby factories.

Residents had come to hear the results of a new report, “Cumulative Impacts in East Oakland: Findings from a Community-Based Mapping Study,” led by Communities for a Better Environment, a grassroots organization that trains local residents to monitor pollution levels in their neighborhoods.

The yearlong study examined the impact of unchecked pollution sources on communities of color within the Hegenberger Corridor, a toxic hot spot bordered by San Leandro St., International Blvd., 98th Ave, and the Hegenberger Expressway.
